My favorite product principle is rapid experimentation.
It's particularly fun to coach seasoned Product Leaders on the need for experimentation in their day-to-day work and in their career visioning.
Our human brains are wired for all-or-nothing, but as PMs, we *know* that lightweight experimentation is the most strategic, least risky way to move a big idea forward.
So often in my work, Product Leaders can coach experimentation to their teams and in their product but fail to do so when it comes to themselves.
I get to resurface experimentation often to help clients get from A to B through incremental, ambitious steps.
We never set out to boil the ocean.
We test, validate or abandon, and keep learning how to drive success.
I didn’t reinvent the wheel here, I’m just following the best of the Product Development Process.
Here are 5 ways I’ve experimented over the past month:
👥 I'm launching a group coaching + co working group for senior product leaders in NYC. After running intimate breakfasts and seeing folks connect, I'm testing an in-person coaching group (and looking to fill a few more spots - Is this you?)
🎤 Podcasting sounds fun, but it's a heavy lift. I’ve started adding little voice notes to the top of my Substack posts to see what kind of engagement they get before over-investing in the medium. Like this one.
🦾 I've used #XpertlyAI to write a lightweight newsletter for Coaching Corner instead of heavily curating and writing content. I set benchmarks around open and click rates (they're already 🔥) before deciding to invest more time and energy into it.
📅 A client of mine is interested in building a community for PMs in her niche sector. Instead of spending time building the whole community first, she's testing her idea with a virtual event, seeing who shows up, and asking them what community means to them.
🎶 As I teach myself how to DJ, I’ve been making mini-mixes. I’m nowhere near ready for a 3-hour set, but creating 20-minute mixes creating accountability to the hobby! Gimme me a listen
When's the last time you experimented? What stops you from starting small? How can you get better at moving more incrementally?
